The documents: a business licence whose scope names manufacturing, IEC 60335 test reports issued in the plant’s own legal name, and an ISO 9001 certificate listing the product you are buying. The call: uncut, camera walking from the raw-material rack to the packing line. That is how you tell a kitchen appliance factory from a trading office with a rented showroom.

Why “kitchen appliance factory” is the most over-claimed label in sourcing

Every marketplace listing, and half the independent sites behind them, calls itself a kitchen appliance factory. Some are three rooms, a sample shelf and a person with a phone. That is no scandal — a good trader often beats a bad plant. The damage starts when a buyer pays factory assumptions against a trader’s service: that the tooling is theirs, that spares will exist in year three.

The three documents, read properly

Business licence with a manufacturing scope

One page, and the fastest filter: in the business-scope field you want production or manufacture of household electrical appliances — not trading, not “sales of”. Then compare the registered address against the address on the test report and on the ISO certificate. Three documents, one address: credible. Three addresses: you are being shown related companies, so find out which one signs the contract and which one makes the goods.

Test reports in the plant’s own name

Open the report to the applicant field. If it names a trading company or brand owner rather than the plant you are talking to, it still describes a real product — just not necessarily one this supplier makes. Check the model list, rated voltage and issue date. A 220–240 V report says nothing about the 120 V version you asked to quote.

ISO 9001 with the product scope written in

Read the scope sentence, not the logo. “Design and manufacture of household electrical appliances” is a manufacturing certificate. “Sales of household appliances” is a distributor’s certificate with the same logo on it. Confirm the certification body is accredited: IAF CertSearch shows whether a certificate sits under a recognised accreditation — the difference between an audited system and a bought PDF.

The one video call that settles it

Book it on a working day and ask for one continuous shot. Have the camera hold on three things: an incoming-material rack with labels still on the cartons, a line with units in progress rather than a finished display, and the station where a serial number or date code is applied. Then have a worker pick up a unit and read the rating label aloud. A trader sends an edited factory film; a plant grumbles and then does it.

Finish with two questions no showroom can answer. What happens to a unit that fails the hipot test — where does it go, who signs it off? And which moulds on the tool rack are yours? A plant answers in specifics: a reject bin with a defined route, a tool number, a name. Our factory tour page covers the nine stations to inspect on the day; this page is about whether there is a plant worth visiting.

Factory or trading office: seven signals side by side

Signal

Reads as a factory

Reads as a trading office

Address on the paperwork

One address on licence, report and certificate

An office floor, or a different address on each document

Who answers technical questions

An engineer on gasket material, tolerance, mould wear

“I will check with our engineer” — a price comes back

Tooling

Names the moulds, shows a tool room, knows which are paid off

“We can open any mould”, no tool room, no tool numbers

Change control

Drawings carry revisions; changes arrive as a dated ECN

Changes agreed in chat, never on paper

Range versus capability

Narrow and deep: one or two categories done properly

A catalogue spanning kettles, fans, ovens, power tools

Certificate holder

The plant is applicant or holder, or holds authorisation

Holder is a third company nobody will name

Spare parts continuity

Keeps spares for its own models, quotes part numbers

“We can order it from the plant” — someone else’s

The four records that prove the process is running

Certificates describe a system; records show it running. Ask for redacted samples from the last three months, not templates.

First article inspection report

Dimensional and functional results on the first unit of a run, signed and dated, citing the drawing revision it was checked against. If it cites a revision two steps behind the drawing you approved, change control does not exist.

OQC record

Outgoing inspection with AQL level, sample size, defect classification and the actual numbers filled in — plus where the rejected units went. What you want is a run where something failed and a disposition was written down: that is the only evidence the gate has teeth. See the routine on our quality control page.

Calibration records

Every pass/fail measurement needs an instrument with a certificate traceable to a national standard, in date: hipot and insulation testers, power meters, torque drivers, thermocouples. Then the check that catches forgery — ask the camera to show the calibration sticker and read its serial number against the record. Labs such as Intertek set out what traceability means in practice.

Corrective action records

One 8D or CAPA from a real complaint: what failed, containment, root cause, verification that the fix worked. Trading offices collapse here, because there is no process to correct — only a promise to “tell the factory”. Read the root-cause line critically: “worker error, retrained” is a non-answer; “thermostat batch out of tolerance, supplier changed, incoming test added” is a system.

Certificate scope: four questions that void most certificates

Certificate failures are rarely forgeries — usually a genuine document for another model, voltage or edition. Our certifications page shows how that paperwork is laid out for our own range.

Does the model list include the model you are buying?

Ask for the model-list page and match your exact model number and rating. “Series approval” is a claim, not a document; either your model appears on the list or a new test is required.

Which voltage, frequency and plug?

A 220–240 V / 50 Hz report does not cover a 120 V / 60 Hz build, and does not cover a UK or Australian plug assembly. Each destination needs its own report or a documented extension.

Which edition and amendment?

The report must state the edition and amendment it was tested to, and that version must be the one your market’s regulator or retail customer currently accepts.

Who is the holder?

Holder, manufacturer and brand owner are three different fields. If the holder is not the plant, the plant cannot extend the certificate to you without the holder’s written authorisation. Get that letter before the PO.

From enquiry to mass production: a 30-day timeline

Day

Stage

What you should receive

What breaks the schedule

0–2

Enquiry and RFQ

Voltage, plug, packaging and target price clarified in writing

A quote before any technical question

3–5

Technical review and quotation

Tolerances, MOQ per colour, tooling status stated

Price “subject to confirmation”

6–9

Sample order

Sample invoice, lead time, courier account

Free sample, no specification

10–16

Sample build and FAI

Build photos, FAI report, label artwork

Sample pulled from stock

17–19

Sample approval

Golden sample signed, dated, sealed

Approval by email only

20–22

PO and deposit

PI matching the approved spec, deposit receipt

PI spec differs from sample

23–27

First production run

Line photos with date code, in-process test data

Component substitution “to save time”

28–30

OQC, inspection, booking

OQC numbers, PSI report, carton plan

Inspection offered after sealing

The timeline assumes existing tooling and standard colours. New tooling, a new plug assembly or a first-time certification adds weeks. Our sourcing guides cover the commercial side of the same sequence.

Three places buyers get burned

The sample that never touched the line

The unit you approved was built in a lab by the person who answers your emails; production comes off a different line, to the same drawing and a different reality. The defence is a golden sample signed by both sides and pictured beside the first carton of the run.

The certificate that covers the model you did not buy

The report is genuine, the model list is real, your model is not on it. This surfaces at the border or at the retailer’s compliance desk, the most expensive possible moment.

The change nobody wrote down

A thermostat, element or cord set is substituted for a cheaper equivalent and nothing on the paperwork moves. Fixed by requiring written approval for any BOM change and a pre-shipment check of the critical components against the approved BOM. Choosing a kitchen appliance factory on price alone is choosing this risk.

Questions buyers ask before they commit

How do I tell a kitchen appliance factory from a trading company in one call?

Ask for an uncut walk from incoming material to packing, then ask what happens to a unit that fails the hipot test. A plant shows a reject bin and a named sign-off; a trader changes the subject to price. That one question separates a kitchen appliance factory from a reseller.

Is a trading company always the wrong choice?

No. For small mixed orders a good trader consolidates better than any plant and absorbs the export risk. The mistake is paying factory terms — tooling ownership, engineering support, spares continuity — for a trading service.

What if the supplier refuses to share OQC or calibration records?

Treat it as a finding, not a negotiation. A flat refusal usually means the records do not exist in usable form. You can still buy, but price the risk with more inspection and a tighter payment split.

Can one kitchen appliance factory certify for both the EU and the US?

Usually yes, but not with one report. The EU route runs through the LVD and EMC directives with harmonised EN standards; the US route through UL or ETL listing. Two reports, two sample sets.

Do I need to visit in person?

Not for a first order, if the documents hold up and the call is unedited. Visit before tooling investment or a private-label launch. Send the specification and we will tell you which checks apply to your model.

Ask for three documents and one live video call before you discuss price.
